Help HCUCC Spruce up the High Country: on April 27, May 5, and May 19, 2013
We have opportunities coming up for HCUCC’ers and friends to clean-up some of our treasured natural areas. The location for the first effort has been selected, but read on down and you’ll see we still need your suggestions to help us choose a trail and a stream site for the two dates in May!
Plan to join us Saturday April 27th at 2:00pm at the Raven Rock Parking Overlook at Milepost 289.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Please note that this is the Raven Rock pull-off located 1.5 miles South of Aho Road, and 2.5 miles North of Hwy 221/321. There is a different Raven Rock not too far away. We welcome folks of all ages and all abilities. Bring some work gloves if you have some.
This place has wonderful rock formations with crevices and plateaus for kids and adults alike to explore, as well as scenic views, within 100 feet of the parking area. Because it is such an easy to access spot where countless picnics and rock scrambles have occurred (ideal for sunset viewing as well), a large volume of litter has built up. We can collect LOTS of litter from a small scenic area quickly!
We are also planning two more gatherings in May. On Sunday May 5th sometime after the service we will gather to enjoy and clean up along a hiking trail. Do you know of a Hiking Trail needing particular attention we could focus on that day?
While we hope our energy for Earth Care continues to strengthen, Sunday May 19th will mark the formal end to the UCC Mission 4/1 Earth — and recognition of all of HCUCC’s 2013 graduates. After worship and graduate recognition conclude, we plan to combine a celebration picnic with a stream or river cleanup. Do you have a particular place in mind that might be a good fit for a picnic and Stream cleanup Site for that day?
Please email Cath Hopkins (CathsNaturePhotos@yahoo.com) with site suggestions for the trail and stream cleanups coming up in May!
